Melbourne’s Good Beer Week 2014 – Good Times Picks

We all know this whole week will be a good time. However, these events are designed to be more than just beer and food, or beer and beer, or beer and tea; but rather beer and good times. Guaranteed good times

This is the last of my wraps. If you need any more advice, I’m happy to help. Or the Good Beer Week team on social media will also assist. They are a lovely bunch.

Saturday 17th of May

Craft + Craft – Thread Den 2pm – 4.30pm

What is Craft + Craft…

I really am terrible at arts and crafts; but this event actually sounds pretty fun. I reckon if you have some friends not so much into the beer but enjoy making stuff, then this would be a great way to win them over.

And yes, I’m a dude who is comfortable saying that making origami hop-flowers and bottle cap jewelry sounds pretty fun.

Bonus unofficial event: Craft Beer Riding

A bikeride around the Pint of Origin venues with some of Melbourne’s beeriest beer geeks. Responsibly enjoy a peddle through the city to sample the best of the beers.

Interstate people – the organisers recommend Tokyo bike hire in Collingwood:

Sunday 18th May

Craft + Craft – Thread Den 2pm – 4.30pm (as above)

The Beer Train – Puffing Billy (Belgrave) – 12pm – 5pm

Featuring beers from Deschutes (USA) and Hargreaves Hill (Vic), a three course meal and a ride on Belgrave’s historic and iconic Puffing Billy. It stands out as something unique and a great way to get out of the city and drink some world class beers. Finish the day at Oscar’s Alehouse for a couple more complimentary beers and see why people who live in Belgrave never want to move.

Wednesday 21st May

Red Ball Snooker Shootout – Red Triangle 7pm – 10.30pm

For anyone that fancies themselves as a bit of a snooker shark, and fancies a great beer, you would be crazy to miss out on this. Food from Shawcross Pizza and Phat Brats, beer from Red Hill, and a Snooker tournament. Great way to spend a midweek night.

Friday 23rd May

Killer Sprocket Comedy  – The Noble Experiment 8pm – late

Featuring Australia’s hottest comedian, Ronny Chieng, and one of the best up and coming brewers in the form of Killer Sprocket, you get a night of quality comedy (6 comedians) and quality beer (first is complimentary). Right now it’s only $15 (book before 17th of May).

$15? Just try find better entertainment cheaper. Here’s a clip from Ronny Chieng:

Frenzal Rhomb Vs Young Henry’s – the Corner Hotel 8pm – late

Legendary Aussie pop-punk band Frenzal Rhomb and the fantastic beers from Young Henry’s takeover the corner. Featuring a collaboration beer between the two.

People always complain about beer at band venues; here’s a great opportunity to drink great beer and see great music at the same times. Something still pretty rare.

Saturday 24th May

The Brewers Blend – Two Birds brewing 12pm – 5pm

Last year this event was a surprise favourite for me. Then it was only two breweries (Two Birds and ParrotDog), while this year it’s been expanded to 6 (and one bar). An informal way to enjoy beer and chat to the brewers, there is no better way to spend an easy Saturday afternoon.

Sunday 25th May

Surf with the Brewers – Red Hill Brewery 9am – 2pm

Dave and Karen from Red Hill are two of the most hospitable brewery owners in Australia. So why not join their team for a surf, a BBQ and some beers. It’ll be good for your soul and a nice break after running around GBW and the CBD.

Good Beer Workout – Flagstaff Gardens 11am – 1pm

One of the best things about working out is having a beer afterwards and one of the best ways to cure a hangover is to work out. This event is designed to cover all of those things.

A workout with a personal trainer, and a couple of beers afterwards. And a singlet thrown in for good measure. This might be the best thing you do all week. You need this. Admit it.
